"63-Year-Old Kerala Woman Saves Lives Through Free Swimming Lessons for Women & Kids"

In the picturesque village of Thattekad, Kannur, a remarkable woman, Janaki Amma, aged 63, is making waves of change by offering free swimming lessons to hundreds of women and children daily. Her mission is simple yet profound: to empower her community with essential life-saving skills and stem the tragic tide of drowning deaths.

Inspired by the alarming statistics revealing 6,710 lives lost to drowning in Kerala from 2016 to 2021, Janaki Amma embarked on her mission eleven years ago. Undeterred by age or conventional wisdom, she defies the myth that swimming cannot be learned later in life. With dedication and passion, she conducts morning and evening classes, accommodating around 100 eager learners each day at 11 am and 4 pm, respectively.

Janaki Amma's commitment goes beyond just teaching swimming; she instills confidence and courage in her students, helping them conquer their water phobia. Her classes cater to women of all ages, dispelling the notion that swimming is reserved for the young. Supported by her family, Janaki Amma's resolve remains unwavering as she vows to continue her noble endeavor for as long as her health permits, recognizing the unpredictability of life and the paramount importance of equipping her community with this vital life skill.
