Archery World Cup 2024: Indian Women’s Compound Team Achieves Historic Hat-Trick of Gold Medals
The Indian women’s compound archery team, consisting of Aditi Swami, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, and Parneet Kaur, secured their third consecutive gold medal at the Archery World Cup 2024 stage 3 in Antalya, Turkiye, on Saturday. The team, having already won gold in Shanghai and Yecheon earlier this year, defeated the sixth-seeded Estonian team of Meeri-Marita Paas, Maris Tetsmann, and Lisell Jaatma 232-226 in the final.
Entering the competition as the top seeds, the Indian trio showcased their dominance by overcoming Turkey 234-227 in the semifinals and El Salvador 235-227 in the quarterfinals. Their strong performance in the qualification round earned them a first-round bye.
Individually, world champion Aditi Swami, Asian Games champion Jyothi Surekha Vennam, and Parneet Kaur had previously clinched gold at the first two stages of the Archery World Cup 2024, cementing their status as the leading team.
In the men’s individual compound event, India’s Priyansh won the silver medal, narrowly losing to the Netherlands’ Mike Schloesser with a score of 149-148. Despite trailing by one point in the final set, Priyansh missed the opportunity to force a shoot-off. Earlier, he had defeated Denmark’s Mathias Fullerton 150-149 in the semifinals.
Prathamesh Fuge and Abhishek Verma, the Asian Games gold medallist, were eliminated in the third round of the men’s individual compound event. Additionally, Priyansh and Jyothi Surekha Vennam, who won mixed compound team silver in Yecheon, were defeated by Italy 156-154 in the quarterfinals in Antalya.
In the women’s individual compound event, Jyothi Surekha Vennam exited in the third round, while Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur were knocked out in the second round.
The Indian men’s compound team, comprising Prathamesh Fuge, Priyansh, and Abhishek Verma, entered the competition as top seeds but fell short in the bronze medal match, losing 236-235 to France’s Nicolas Girard, Jean Philippe Boulch, and Adrien Gontier.
Looking ahead, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat will compete in the men’s and women’s individual recurve semifinals, respectively, on Sunday. The women’s recurve team of Deepika Kumari, Bhajan Kaur, and Ankita Bhakat missed out on the bronze, losing to Japan 6-0, while the men’s team of Tarundeep Rai, Pravin Jadhav, and Dhiraj Bommadevara were eliminated in the second round.
