Arti, 18-Year-Old Pink E-Rickshaw Driver from Bahraich, Wins Prestigious UK Award
Arti, an 18-year-old rickshaw driver from a village in Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, has achieved international recognition by receiving the prestigious Amal Clooney Woman Empowerment Award in London. Sponsored by the British charity Prince's Trust, this award celebrates young women who have overcome significant challenges to make a lasting impact on their communities.
Arti was recognized for her inspirational work with the Pink E-Rickshaw initiative, a part of the Uttar Pradesh government's Mission Shakti scheme launched in 2020. This initiative aims to empower women by providing them with training to drive e-rickshaws, knowledge of traffic rules, and employment opportunities, particularly targeting widows and single mothers.
Joining the scheme in July 2023, Arti has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for other young girls facing similar challenges. Her dedication and achievements earned her the honor of meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, marking a historic moment as she likely became the first person to arrive at the palace in an e-rickshaw.
Reflecting on her journey, Arti expressed, "I take pride in being able to inspire other girls who face similar challenges. This newfound independence has allowed me to see the world in a different light. Now, I am able to fulfill not only my dreams but also those of my daughter." She shared her excitement about meeting King Charles, who was attentive and appreciated her eco-friendly mode of transportation.
The Pink E-Rickshaw initiative, supported by the Bahraich district administration, subsidizes e-rickshaws for women drivers, aiming to improve their access to safe transportation and create sustainable employment opportunities. Tinni Sawhney, CEO of AKF (India), who accompanied Arti to the award ceremony, praised her as a role model for women in her village, embodying courage, perseverance, and determination.
Arti's story highlights the transformative power of initiatives like Mission Shakti and underscores the importance of empowering women through education, training, and self-reliance. Her achievement serves as a testament to the potential of women to overcome adversity and make significant contributions to their communities.
