Assam Hero: Manoj Gogoi’s 12-Year Mission Rescues Over 5000 Kaziranga Animals

For twelve years, Manoj Gogoi has dedicated his life to rescuing and rehabilitating animals in Kaziranga, Assam. His tireless efforts have saved over 5,000 animals, earning him widespread recognition and accolades.

One night, the villagers of Bochagaon were awoken by the clucking of chickens, only to find a large snake devouring a hen. Instead of killing the snake, the villagers called Manoj Gogoi, known locally as ‘the man who speaks nature.’ This marks a significant change in the mindset of the community, a transformation Gogoi has been instrumental in bringing about.

"Ten years ago, the villagers would have lynched the snake without a second thought," says Gogoi. "However, there's a growing awareness about the importance of each element in the wilderness, and the villagers respect snakes now." His work has not only influenced adults but also inspired children to protect wildlife.

A touching incident highlights his impact: a boy brought a turtle to the Corbett Foundation office, wanting it released into the wild instead of kept as a pet. Dr. Naveen Pandey, Deputy Director of the foundation, attributes such actions to Gogoi’s influence.

Gogoi's journey began in Kaziranga, where he grew up surrounded by wildlife. His passion for nature led him to pursue a course at the Bombay Natural History Society in 2006. Despite the uncertainty from his parents and financial struggles, Gogoi founded the Naturalists for Rehabilitation of Snakes and Birds (NRSB) in 2007. Today, NRSB has 100 volunteers.

Gogoi's work caught the attention of the Corbett Foundation, which offered him a role in their rescue department in 2013. This collaboration expanded his reach and resources, enabling him to rescue animals even from distant locations.

The foundation honored Gogoi with the “Wildlife Warrior” award in 2014. By 2019, he received the Passion Award from India Star Book of Records, adding to his list of accolades.

Gogoi's efforts extend beyond rescues. He conducts conservation education programs, inspiring children with his rescue stories. His most memorable rescue involved raising three tiny kingfisher babies until they could fly.

Manoj Gogoi’s unwavering dedication to wildlife conservation has made a lasting impact on Kaziranga. His story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance in making a difference.
