Bamboo Artistry: Tribal Woman's Journey from Homemaker to Global Entrepreneur
In the quaint village of Tetwali, Maharashtra, Namita Namdev Bhurkood's journey from homemaker to bamboo artist and entrepreneur is making waves globally. Leading a women's self-help group, Namita transforms bamboo into an array of beautiful products, including Diwali kandils, phone holders, rakhis, and more.
Namita's story took a pivotal turn in 2001 when she embraced the opportunity to learn bamboo craft. Despite skepticism from neighbors and family friends, her mother-in-law's support and the backing of NGO 'Keshav Srushti' empowered Namita and her sister-in-law to pursue training, challenging societal norms.
Under the guidance of Gaurav Shrivastava, the initiative aimed at financial empowerment for tribal women gained momentum. This Diwali, their bamboo kandils sold over 3,000 units, reaching markets in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. Gaurav emphasizes the eco-friendly nature of their products, all crafted from 100% bamboo, contributing to sustainability.
Namita's dedication and hard work have led to the establishment of 'Vikramgad Bamboo Udyog Producer Company Limited.' Earning an average of Rs 9,000 monthly, Namita is proud to contribute to her household income. Beyond personal success, she has trained 57 women and aspires to empower more, particularly discouraging young girls from migrating to cities for work.
Namita's journey is more than financial success; it symbolizes the confidence and independence she gained. Her inspiring story echoes the transformation of a traditional homemaker into a global entrepreneur, leaving a lasting impact on her village and beyond.
