Bengaluru Man’s Initiative Offers Free Medical Equipment to Those in Need

Medical expenses can be a financial strain for many, especially when it comes to purchasing essential medical equipment. Recognizing this, Bengaluru’s Ajayan Namminipurthu launched the Sanathya Foundation to provide free medical equipment like wheelchairs, nebulisers, walkers, and beds to those who cannot afford them.
Ajayan’s journey toward social service began in 2016 after a visit to an orphanage on Mysore Road. Moved by the sight of children sleeping on the floor, he sought help on Facebook to arrange for beds. The overwhelming response inspired him to continue supporting those in need.
The idea for the Sanathya Foundation took root in 2015 when his father’s health condition required extensive use of medical equipment like a hospital bed, wheelchair, walker, and walking stick. Once his father’s health improved, much of the equipment became redundant. When sellers refused to take back the equipment, Ajayan saw an opportunity to help others.
With no initial funding to build a dedicated website, Ajayan’s employer provided storage space. Leveraging social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, he began collecting and distributing pre-loved medical equipment. The process is simple: individuals can borrow items, use them as needed, and return them when they’re no longer required. The foundation’s impact has since grown, helping over 85 people so far.
“The demand for such equipment is not limited to the elderly; anyone might require it. My foundation aims to assist individuals who cannot afford these items. We ship the equipment to them at no cost,” Ajayan says.
The process is straightforward. Requests are received via social media, and if the equipment is unavailable in storage, a request is posted online. Once obtained, Ajayan personally collects and delivers the items. He ensures that borrowers care for the equipment and return it when it’s no longer needed.
Ajayan’s initiative has made a significant impact on lives like that of Prashant, a 30-year-old from Kolar, Karnataka, who suffered a spinal cord injury. “The injury wasn’t severe initially, but a lack of proper care worsened it. Ajayan’s foundation provided a recliner bed and wheelchair free of cost, which I’ve been using for four months. My condition is improving,” says Prashant.
The foundation also offers an emotional outlet for donors, many of whom are attached to the items as they belonged to loved ones. “Often, people are sentimental about these items as they might be the last items used by their parents. By donating to the foundation, they feel a sense of purpose knowing it’s helping someone in need,” Ajayan shares.
While Ajayan’s foundation may be small, its impact is profound. By bridging the gap in access to medical equipment, he ensures that more people can receive essential healthcare support regardless of their financial situation.
