Bhilar, Maharashtra:
Often referred to as India's first "Pustakanche Gaav" (Village of Books), Bhilar is nestled in the scenic hills of the Western Ghats near Mahabaleshwar. Established in 2017 and inspired by Hay-on-Wye in Wales, Bhilar has transformed into a literary paradise. It houses numerous libraries set up in homes, temples, and public spaces, featuring over 15,000 books in Marathi, English, and Hindi. This initiative aims to promote regional literature and encourage a reading culture among visitors and locals alike. Tourists can stroll through the village, enjoying its serene environment while engaging with a variety of books and literary events hosted regularly.
Perumkulam, Kerala:
Declared Kerala’s first Book Village in 2021, Perumkulam is a quaint village in Kollam district rich in cultural heritage and now a growing literary destination. The village owes its transformation to the efforts of local enthusiasts and the Progressive Art and Cultural Society. Perumkulam's libraries, scattered across public and private spaces, house an impressive collection of books in Malayalam, English, and other languages. This initiative nurtures a love for reading and aims to bridge the gap between rural and urban literacy rates. Visitors to Perumkulam can experience the village’s vibrant cultural festivals, storytelling sessions, and literary discussions that celebrate Kerala’s rich literary traditions.
Aragam, Jammu & Kashmir:
The latest addition to India’s Book Villages, Aragam in the Bandipora district of Jammu & Kashmir, was declared a Book Village in 2023. Known for its stunning natural beauty, Aragam has embraced literature to foster community development and education. The village features libraries with an extensive collection of books in Urdu, English, and Kashmiri. These libraries are located in schools, community halls, and scenic outdoor spots, providing residents and visitors with ample opportunities to read and learn. The initiative aims to improve literacy rates and cultural awareness while promoting the region's rich literary traditions. Literary events, book fairs, and cultural programs are regularly organized to engage the community and visitors alike.
