Vidhan Bhaiya's Stylish yet Functional Shoes Aim to Prevent Diabetes-Related Amputations

In 2016, a family event became the catalyst for Vidhan Bhaiya's entrepreneurial journey. Witnessing his uncle's discomfort due to diabetic neuropathy and the unattractive diabetic shoes available, Vidhan, a 23-year-old engineering graduate from Chennai, launched Dr Brinsley. This diabetic footwear company combines medical utility with style, offering fashionable shoes designed to reduce friction, shear stress, prevent external shocks, and accommodate deformities associated with diabetes.

India, with an 8.7% diabetic population in the age group of 20-70, faces significant health challenges. Recognizing the need for proper footwear to prevent complications, Vidhan embarked on a journey that led him to work with experts at Northeastern University, Boston, where he received crucial mentoring and a grant of $5,000.

Dr Brinsley shoes, priced between Rs 999 and Rs 3,999, boast features such as anti-sweat leather lining and a soft memory foam footbed. About 500 pairs are replenished every 25 days, primarily ordered by young professionals for their middle-aged and elderly family members.

The pandemic prompted a shift in Dr Brinsley's business strategy, emphasizing direct individual sales over hospital partnerships. Vidhan partnered with online retailers, expanding the brand's reach and focusing on creating awareness.

Despite initial challenges, Vidhan's perseverance paid off, with Dr Brinsley now associated with 85 hospitals across the country and impacting the lives of around a thousand diabetics. As he prepares to pursue an MBA at Harvard, Vidhan envisions the future of Dr Brinsley in research areas such as smart insoles and customized footwear for patients at risk of amputation or dealing with foot disorders.
