"Class 12 Innovator Lights Up Rural India with Inverter Bulbs"
Uday Bhatia, a determined Class 12 student from Delhi, has become a beacon of hope for rural communities in India with his innovative solution to the persistent problem of power outages. Inspired by a volunteering experience in Bichpuri, Uttar Pradesh, where he discovered the challenges faced by students due to frequent power cuts, Uday embarked on a mission to address the power crisis in rural areas.
Recognizing the financial constraints that hindered access to conventional solutions like inverters, Uday set out to create an affordable and sustainable alternative. After extensive research and numerous prototypes, he successfully developed 'Uday Electric' bulbs, serving as both lighting sources and inverters with an impressive 8-10 hour backup during power outages.
Motivated by the power shortages in states like Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Uday's solution aimed to cater specifically to remote villages. His journey began in April 2022, setting up a makeshift workstation on his terrace armed with a soldering iron and determination. Leveraging his passion for computer science, Uday learned to assemble the bulbs and employed pulse modulation algorithms, increasing the backup time through energy optimization.
Utilizing a lithium-ion battery and control systems, Uday ingeniously adjusted the bulb's brightness to extend backup duration, offering versatility to users. The technology is simple yet effective—when connected to a power source, the bulb stores energy in the battery, illuminating during power outages through a rectifier.
With the launch of 'Uday Electric' in May 2022 at an affordable price of Rs 250, Uday not only provided a practical solution to rural households but also created an opportunity for local farmers and villagers to earn extra income by participating in the sales process. Boasting a 1-year warranty, the bulbs have reached over 7,000 households across Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and the outskirts of Delhi.
Uday's initiative goes beyond business; he donated 950 units to households in Kabadi Bazar, Dehradun, through the Aasra Foundation, bringing joy to those living without electricity. His impact extends further, earning him the prestigious Diana Award 2023 for outstanding contributions to positive social change.
Having initially manufactured the bulbs on his terrace, Uday now outsources production. Looking ahead, he aspires to expand his impact by developing a tube light using the same innovative design, with a focus on assisting factories in rural areas to save costs and reduce inverter usage.
Uday's commitment to illuminating households in rural areas demonstrates the transformative power of ingenuity and compassion, lighting the way for positive change in the lives of those most in need.
