Foreign Climbers Rescued from Uttarakhand's Chaukhambha Mountain After Three Days
After a tense three-day ordeal, two foreign climbers, Mission Theresa from the United States and Jane Manners from Britain, were successfully rescued from the treacherous slopes of Chaukhambha mountain in Uttarakhand. The climbers, who had embarked on a mountaineering expedition to Chaukhambha-III, became stranded at an altitude of over 6,000 meters when their technical equipment and supplies fell from a height of 6,015 meters. This incident left them unable to continue or descend safely.
The expedition, organized by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, first reported the climbers missing to local authorities on October 3 at around 6 p.m. In response, Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari quickly reached out to the Department of Military Affairs (DMA) and the Ministry of Defense to initiate an air search.
On Friday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed helicopters to locate the climbers, but the initial search attempt was unsuccessful. In response, ground teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were mobilized on Saturday, joining forces with the Army and other agencies involved in the operation. After a detailed planning session, all parties crafted a comprehensive strategy to locate and rescue the climbers.
In a significant breakthrough, a French mountaineering team, also in the area, managed to make contact with Theresa and Manners. Acting on this information, a joint rescue team comprising members of the SDRF, IAF, and the Nehru Mountaineering Institute was dispatched to the site from an Army helipad in Jyotirmath.
Facing severe conditions that included icy terrain and harsh winds, the rescue team pressed on with the operation. Continuous oversight from the National Disaster Management Authority ensured effective coordination among all agencies involved.
At last, on Sunday morning, both climbers were brought safely back to the Army helipad in Jyotirmath. They are reported to be in good health following their dramatic rescue. This successful operation highlights the tireless efforts of the IAF, SDRF, and all other institutions involved in the mission to bring these climbers to safety.
