"Former Homemaker Takes the Plunge: Championing Coral Reef Conservation Through Scuba Diving"

Uma Mani's remarkable journey from a content homemaker to a passionate environmental advocate is inspiring waves of change. At the age of 49, Uma embarked on a new chapter of her life, trading in her domestic duties for a scuba diving suit and a mission to protect coral reefs.

Born and raised in Chennai, Uma's life took an unexpected turn when she moved to the Maldives with her husband, where he worked as a doctor. Despite her interest in painting, Uma's focus remained on her family and household responsibilities. It wasn't until her mid-40s that she reignited her passion for art, which ultimately led her to discover a newfound fascination with coral reefs.

Driven by her growing concern for marine pollution and the deteriorating state of coral reefs, Uma made a bold decision to pursue scuba diving at the age of 49. Overcoming initial fears and doubts, she embraced the underwater world with open arms, captivated by the beauty and fragility of the coral ecosystems.

With each dive, Uma's commitment to coral reef conservation deepened. Witnessing firsthand the devastating impact of pollution on marine life fueled her determination to raise awareness and instigate change. Collaborating with documentary filmmaker Priya Thuvassery, Uma's efforts culminated in the creation of the award-winning documentary 'Coral Woman,' shedding light on the urgent need to protect our oceans.

In addition to filmmaking, Uma utilizes her artistic talents to advocate for marine conservation. Through painting exhibitions held across the country, she portrays the plight of coral reefs, emphasizing the importance of art as a catalyst for social transformation.

A decade since her first dive, Uma's dedication to environmental activism remains unwavering. Whether speaking at schools, colleges, or corporate events, she tirelessly educates others about the importance of preserving our oceans. Recently recognized as the 'Earth Champion of the Month' by Sony BBC Earth, Uma continues to amplify the voice of our oceans, urging collective action to safeguard marine ecosystems for future generations.

Uma's journey serves as a testament to the power of individual action in combating environmental challenges. Through her courage, passion, and determination, she exemplifies the transformative impact that one person can have on the world around them.
