From Barren Land to Lush Oasis: Kerala Man Transforms Mining Site into Eco-Friendly Homestay
Mustafa P A, a businessman from Kerala, embarked on an extraordinary journey in 2016. He purchased a 5.5-acre barren mining site with the ambitious vision of turning it into a green oasis. Today, that vision is a reality known as Greenara Homestay, a vibrant sanctuary featuring thousands of trees, man-made ponds, and eco-friendly mud cottages.
Inspired by his travels to countries like China, Vietnam, and Thailand, Mustafa spent nearly a decade searching for the perfect piece of land. When he finally found it in Karipur, Kerala, it was devoid of life. Determined to revive the land, Mustafa invested time in studying ecosystem restoration through books, videos, and consultations with experts.
The transformation began with the creation of a large pond, which was then divided into streams to nourish the entire property. Mustafa planted over 2,000 trees, including bamboo and a Miyawaki forest, alongside hundreds of fruit trees and a variety of tropical plants. The result is a lush, green environment reminiscent of the evergreen rainforests.
Greenara Homestay, managed by Mustafa’s daughter Haneena P A, offers a unique retreat amidst this tropical paradise. The homestay features three types of accommodations built from natural materials like mud, straw, and wood. These include two mud houses, a community hall for up to 12 guests, and a residency ideal for artists, writers, and musicians seeking a longer stay.
The homestay emphasizes a connection with nature over traditional luxury. Guests are encouraged to appreciate the conservation efforts and experience the serene environment. The property includes seven water bodies, two of which are designed for swimming in natural, tropical ponds.
Regular workshops and events allow guests to engage with the environment. Mustafa visits the farm daily to share the story of the land’s transformation and the significance of each plant. Visitors can also participate in landscaping classes led by Mustafa himself.
Culinary experiences at Greenara Homestay are equally enchanting. Meals, primarily Malabari cuisine, are prepared by Mustafa’s wife using seasonal ingredients, many of which are grown on the farm. This approach ensures fresh, delicious meals served in traditional earthen pots.
Greenara Homestay is a testament to the power of vision and dedication. It provides a rejuvenating escape for those looking to coexist with nature, offering an authentic experience far removed from conventional luxury. As past guest Devendra Singh remarked, the lush forests, beautiful water bodies, and authentic meals create a mesmerizing and soothing experience.
For those yearning to reconnect with nature, Greenara Homestay is the perfect getaway, reflecting a deep respect for the environment and a commitment to sustainable living.
