Haryana's Green Crusader: Police Constable Devender Sura's Mission to Transform Sonipat

In an era where environmental conservation is crucial, Police Constable Devender Sura stands out as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Affectionately known as the 'Tree Man of Haryana,' Sura has planted over 2 lakh trees in Sonipat, Haryana, over the past decade, inspiring many with his dedication to making the state greener.

Devender Sura's journey began in 2011 when he moved to Chandigarh. The lush green environment of the city ignited a passion within him to initiate a similar transformation in his home district. "When I came to Chandigarh, I saw its greenery and got motivated to do something for Mother Earth from which everyone gets benefit," recalls Sura.

In 2012, Sura started his plantation drive in Sonipat, Haryana, approaching the task with a systematic plan. Convinced that if a city could become green through concerted efforts, the entire nation could follow suit, he began his mission. "I believe that if a city can be made green with a plan, then the whole nation can be made green with a plan. With this inspiration, I started the plantation drive from Sonipat, Haryana," says Sura.

Sura's efforts extended beyond merely planting trees; he also embarked on a mission to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. His relentless efforts and ability to inspire others have been instrumental in the success of his initiative. Former Minister of State Darshana Jardosh lauded Sura's commitment, stating, "Mr. Devender Sura is a champion of the environmental cause. His example should serve as a beacon of inspiration to all!"

Over the past decade, Sura has not only planted lakhs of trees but has also managed to cultivate a community of environmentally conscious individuals. His work has transformed barren lands into green landscapes, significantly contributing to the local ecosystem and the well-being of the community. To fund his efforts, Sura took a ₹35 lakh loan for Janta Nursery and plantation in Sonipat, as reported by ETV Bharat.

In 2023, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari honoured Constable Sura at IIT Delhi for his outstanding contributions to environmental conservation. Currently serving in Chandigarh Police's VIP security, Sura resides at Sector-3 police station and travels exclusively by bicycle or public transport to promote environmental preservation.
