Historic Rise for Indian Women's Hockey Team in World Rankings

New Delhi, November 9, 2023 - In a remarkable turn of events, the Indian Women's Hockey Team has surged to the sixth position in the global rankings with a rating of 2368.83 points. This achievement follows their extraordinary success in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2022 and the recent triumph at the Jharkhand Women's Asian Champions Trophy in Ranchi in 2023.

Previously ranked eighth, the Indian Women's Hockey Team has made history with their bronze medal win at the Asian Games and a dominant performance at the Asian Champions Trophy. This surge has propelled them back to their best-ever world ranking, last achieved during the FIH Pro League in June 2022.

The Netherlands continues to maintain its status as the world's leading women's hockey team with a commanding 3422.40 points. Australia secures the second position with 2817.73 points, followed closely by Argentina in third place with 2766.90 points. Belgium holds the fourth position with 2608.77 points, and Germany ranks fifth with 2573.72 points.

This elevation in the world rankings is a significant morale boost for the team as they gear up for the upcoming FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers, set to take place in Ranchi, India from January 13 to 19, 2024. In this crucial tournament, the Indian women's hockey team will face tough competition from the Czech Republic, Germany, New Zealand, Japan, Chile, the United States, and Italy as they vie for a spot in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Hockey India President Padma Shri Dr. Dilip Tirkey commended the Indian Women's Hockey Team, saying, "I would like to congratulate the team on achieving this ranking, it is a testament to the hard work and sacrifices they have made in their careers so far." Dr. Tirkey expressed optimism for the future, envisioning the team's climb to the top three, especially with the addition of Peter Haberl as a mental conditioning coach, who is expected to contribute to their ongoing growth.

Hockey India Secretary General Shri Bhola Nath Singh echoed these sentiments, stating, "The Indian Women's Hockey Team deserves all the accolades they are receiving; they have worked hard to become the sixth-best team in the world." Singh also highlighted the upcoming FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers as an excellent opportunity for India to showcase its formidable presence in the world of hockey.

The Indian Women's Hockey Team's remarkable rise in the rankings reflects their dedication, determination, and exceptional performances on the global stage, and it bodes well for their prospects in the upcoming Olympic qualifiers.
