How Kamal Malik Revived Asia's Oldest Ice Factory into Mumbai's Creative Hub, IF.BE
Kamal Malik, a celebrated architect, has revitalized Mumbai’s historic 1878 Ice Factory, turning it into IF.BE, a creative and cultural hub in Ballard Estate. What once served as a key player in ice production for South Bombay is now a vibrant space for art exhibitions, performances, and workshops. Malik's vision, sparked by the image of a banyan tree within the courtyard, was to preserve the building’s historic charm while integrating sustainable practices, maintaining its raw, authentic appeal.
The 10,000-square-foot IF.BE features distinct sections like the Banyan Tree Café, art spaces, and a fine dining restaurant. The meticulous restoration retained elements like the Burma teak woodwork and cooling coils used in ice production, blending history with modern design. Malik’s commitment to sustainability ensured minimal architectural intervention, making IF.BE a unique destination where artists, architects, and creatives gather to collaborate and share ideas.
