IIT Kanpur Develops Filter to Convert ACs into Air Purifiers, Tackling Air Pollution

With air pollution worsening across India, especially as winter approaches, many are turning to air purifiers to protect against respiratory diseases. Now, a breakthrough from IIT Kanpur’s incubator company "Earth" offers a practical and affordable solution—a special filter that converts air conditioners into air purifiers.

Developed using Japanese technology, this filter can be installed in any AC unit, allowing it to purify the air while cooling in summer and functioning as an effective air purifier in ‘fan’ mode during winter. The innovative filter not only removes pollution but also eliminates harmful elements and viruses from indoor air, promoting better health, especially for those with respiratory issues.

Ravi Kaushik, an IIT Bombay alumnus and director of Earth, was inspired by the rising pollution levels across the country, particularly in Delhi, where he grew up. Seeing a lack of affordable solutions, he collaborated with experts from IIT Kanpur to create a filter that’s accessible to all. Priced at Rs 2,000, it offers an alternative to expensive air purifiers, making clean air more attainable for the common man.

Launched in 2023 under Ravi's startup "Airth", the filter has already sold thousands of units online, marking a significant step towards improving air quality in homes and offices nationwide.
