India Sets World Record with 642 Million Voters in 2024 Lok Sabha Elections
Ahead of the June 4 counting day for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced a groundbreaking achievement: 642 million voters participated in the general elections, setting a new world record. Among them, an impressive 312 million women cast their votes during the seven-phase elections.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar, in a press conference, highlighted the significance of this milestone. “We have created a world-unique record of 642 million proud Indian voters. This is a historic moment for all of us. To give you some context, this is 1.5 times the number of voters in all G7 countries—US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada—combined,” he stated.
CEC Kumar emphasized that the comparison was based on the number of voters, not electors, noting that India’s voter turnout was 2.5 times that of the 27 countries in the European Union. “There are 312 million women voters, marking the highest number ever recorded globally. This surpasses both the total and the women voter turnout of the 2019 elections. We must cherish this,” he added.
The ECI extended a standing ovation to all voters who participated in the Lok Sabha polls, celebrating this extraordinary demonstration of democratic engagement. This remarkable milestone underscores India's dynamic democratic fabric, showcasing a nation where every voice matters and every vote counts! 🇮🇳
