India Shines at Paris Paralympics 2024: Avani Lekhara Wins Historic Second Gold, Leads Medal Tally
India's para-athletes delivered a remarkable performance on the second day of the Paris Paralympics 2024, with Avani Lekhara leading the way. Avani, who had previously clinched gold in Tokyo, successfully defended her title in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle SH1 category, breaking her own record with a score of 249.7. This victory makes her the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympic Games. Mona Agarwal also shone in the same event, earning a bronze with a score of 228.7.
The success continued in athletics, where Preethi Pal secured a historic bronze in the 100m T35 event, clocking a time of 14.21 seconds. This marked India's first-ever athletics medal in a Paralympic track event. Meanwhile, Manish Narwal showcased resilience in the men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 category, overcoming challenges to secure a silver with a score of 234.9 points.
India's strong showing at the Paris Paralympics 2024 underscores the nation's growing prowess in para-sports. With the largest-ever contingent of 84 athletes competing across 12 sports, India is poised to build on its success from the Tokyo 2020 Games, where it won a record 19 medals, including five golds.
