Innovative 'Gold Composter' Revolutionizes Waste Management in India
In a groundbreaking development, Waste Is Gold Technologies, a Bengaluru-based waste management company, has introduced a cutting-edge organic waste composter, aptly named the 'Gold Composter,' which boasts the capability to convert organic waste ranging from 20 kg to a staggering 10 tonnes into nutrient-rich compost within just eight hours. The most remarkable feature is that this process occurs entirely without emitting harmful emissions, setting a new standard for eco-conscious waste management.
The scale of India's waste management challenge cannot be overstated, with over 62 million tonnes of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated, and a significant portion ending up in landfills due to limited processing. Waste Is Gold Technologies is one of several ventures across India working diligently to address this pressing issue.
Founder Sandeep Tiwari describes the Gold Composter as a "marvel of waste management technology" that can process hundreds of tons of organic waste daily. The composter operates on a natural bio-mechanical process, leveraging proprietary bacteria and bioreactor technology to rapidly break down organic waste, eliminating the need for excessive heating and preventing harmful emissions like methane.
Tiwari explains, "This machine facilitates aerobic composting by meticulously maintaining the ideal temperature, air, oxygen, and moisture conditions, guaranteeing a fast and efficient transformation of organic waste." The resulting compost requires no further processing and can be used immediately for landscaping and gardening, promoting soil health and sustainability.
Importantly, this innovation aligns with the Union government's Solid Waste Management Policy 2016, which mandates bulk waste generators to process their waste on-site. By placing these aerobic composters directly at clients' premises, Waste Is Gold Technologies helps organizations comply with government directives, reduce landfill pressure, and contribute to a cleaner environment.
Before entering the Gold Composter, organic waste undergoes a critical step of meticulous resegregation to remove any inorganic materials, optimizing the composting process and enhancing the quality of the nutrient-rich compost. This compost can be used for landscaping or sold to farmers for organic farming practices, closing the loop on organic waste and promoting sustainable waste management.
Waste Is Gold Technologies has gained recognition for its composters, with the Central Food Technological Research Institute adopting them for research and development and to set composting standards across India. Currently, approximately 150 of these composters are installed nationwide, processing about 2,500 tonnes of waste and generating 1,200 tones of compost each month.
The journey to developing the Gold Composter was no easy feat, taking five years of extensive research and development to refine the technology. Tiwari recalls their first prototype in 2015, which transformed waste into compost in just 15 days, setting them apart from competitors requiring up to 45 days for the same results. Waste Is Gold Technologies officially incorporated in January 2018 and introduced the Gold Composter to the market, positioning it among the world's fastest organic waste processors.
The positive impact of the Gold Composter is evident in testimonials from clients like Prestige Royal Gardens and Address Maker, where the composters have replaced machines emitting methane and generated compost within the same day.
Looking ahead, Waste Is Gold Technologies seeks external funding to further expand its transformative products and introduce a portable composter for individual villas and houses, encouraging homeowners to actively participate in sustainable waste management. The company plans to diversify its presence in various waste management verticals, including bio mining and dry waste management and processing.
This revolutionary technology promises to revolutionize waste management in India, reducing environmental impact, and promoting sustainable practices across the nation. Stay tuned for more updates on this game-changing innovation.
