Innovator Creates 'Social Media' Platform to Empower Social Workers and Changemakers

Neenu Rathin, a homemaker from Kerala, transformed her search for a deeper purpose into a groundbreaking initiative. Struggling to find her passion, Neenu found her calling in social work, leading her to create Social Town, a non-profit organization designed to empower changemakers and NGOs by providing connections, opportunities, and knowledge to foster social development.

Raised in Thrissur district, Neenu's journey was marked by uncertainty about her career path. Initially pursuing engineering, she quickly realized her true interests lay elsewhere. After a brief stint as a lecturer, she discovered her passion for social work through volunteering with the Art of Living Foundation, organizing environmental awareness programs in schools.

Neenu's commitment to social impact grew as she participated in relief efforts during Kerala's devastating floods in 2018 and 2019. These experiences highlighted the power of collective action and fueled her desire to create a platform for like-minded individuals.

In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Neenu's vision for Social Town took shape. Incubated at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore’s NSRCEL, the organization rapidly grew, engaging over 6,000 stakeholders. Utilizing WhatsApp groups and emails for communication, Social Town disseminates vital information on policy changes, incubation programs, and more.

Social Town operates as a free membership community, connecting changemakers with resources and support. For example, it assists individuals in raising funds and securing necessary equipment for educational institutions. Akber Ali, a social worker aiding tribal communities in Wayanad, praises Social Town for its crucial support during crises like floods, landslides, and the pandemic.

Reflecting on her journey, Neenu emphasizes the importance of taking the first step towards making a difference. She believes anyone, regardless of their background, can create significant societal impact through small, collective actions.

For those looking to make a change or start their social work journey, Neenu Rathin and Social Town offer the platform and support needed to turn aspirations into reality.
