Koodugal Nest: Transforming Chennai’s Schools into Safe Havens for Sparrows
Koodugal Trust, a Chennai-based NGO, is merging education and conservation to protect sparrows while inspiring future generations to embrace environmental responsibility. Founded by Ganeshan D, the initiative focuses on boosting the sparrow population through nest conservation and community engagement.
Rooted in Ganeshan's childhood love for nature, Koodugal Nest began during his MTech years in 2014. His journey from mechanical engineer and professor to environmental activist reflects a lifelong commitment to nature. Supported by his wife, Shanthini, the trust was formally registered in 2020, transforming their passion into action.
The core mission involves educating schools and communities about sparrows' ecological importance. Activities like constructing sparrow nest boxes empower students while providing habitats for the birds. These efforts address challenges like habitat loss caused by urbanization.
Koodugal's impact is significant: sparrow populations have increased by 15%, with sanctuaries established in eight schools, sheltering 100–200 sparrows per campus. Feedback from students and cost-effective, hands-on methods—such as assembling nest boxes—have ensured sustainability.
Corporate partnerships and community involvement play crucial roles in the trust’s success. With over 10,000 nest boxes distributed, Koodugal envisions reaching 1,00,000 families within a decade, aiming to make sparrows a common sight across Chennai.
Awarded the Tamil Nadu Leadership Award and Inspiro Award, Koodugal Nest symbolizes the power of grassroots conservation, blending education with ecological action to inspire a sustainable future.
