Ladakhi Woman Creates Safe Haven for 170+ Stray Dogs in Leh
In the heart of Leh, Ladakh, 27-year-old Jigmet Nurzin Angmo has established a haven for over 170 stray and abandoned dogs through her Semchan Welfare Society. The rescue shelter, which began after Jigmet was deeply moved by the sight of an injured dog left on the road, now serves as a sanctuary for sick, injured, and aggressive dogs. With the help of dog trainer Deena Talbot and a dedicated team, the shelter provides daily care, medical treatment, and rehabilitation to the growing population of stray dogs in the region. Jigmet's compassion and determination have led her to not only rescue these animals but also offer them a safe environment where they can heal and thrive.
Semchan Welfare Society operates a well-organized rescue and feeding program that covers up to 700 dogs across Leh, in addition to the 170 housed at their shelter. Dogs receive personalized care, with their medical histories tracked, and pens designed to accommodate different needs based on age, health, and temperament. Despite the challenges posed by an ever-growing number of strays, the shelter continues to expand its efforts, working to provide more space, better facilities, and consistent care. Jigmet's mission, rooted in empathy and driven by community support, is creating a ripple effect of change for Leh’s stray dog population.
