A Farmer's 30-Year Journey of Compassion: Protecting and Nurturing Peacocks in Madhya Pradesh
A Farmer's 30-Year Journey of Compassion: Protecting and Nurturing Peacocks in Madhya Pradesh

In a heartwarming tale of compassion and commitment, Narayan Singh Anjana, a dedicated farmer from Madhya Pradesh’s Jhabua district, shares his incredible journey of safeguarding the lives of around 1,000 injured peacocks over the past three decades. The story began when Narayan, at the tender age of 12, encountered an injured peacock outside a temple, sparking a lifelong mission to protect these majestic birds in his village.

Moved by the sight of the helpless national bird, Narayan, with his father's assistance, sought veterinary care for the injured peacock. This transformative experience led him to vow to shield every peacock in his community. Now in his 50s, Narayan resides in Kardawad village, part of the Petlawad region, boasting the largest peacock population in the state.

Despite challenges such as chemical farming, lack of drinking facilities, stray dog attacks, and electrocution, Narayan remains undeterred. In a region where poaching has been curbed due to vigilant villagers, Narayan collaborates with the district administration and forest department to address other concerns. The community has even allocated funds for a boundary wall and a peacock park near a river, a project currently in progress.

Known affectionately as 'Mor wala' (Peacock Man), Narayan's dedication extends beyond his own household. Villagers, recognizing his commitment, bring injured or weak peacocks to him, and he welcomes them with open arms, considering each peacock as part of his family. His emotional connection reached its pinnacle when he had a peacock named Gori as a pet, emphasizing the deep bond between man and bird.

His family, including his daughter Monika, actively supports his cause, saving and caring for peacocks. On any given day, 10-15 peacocks visit Narayan's home for food and water. To sustain this, he has adapted by growing corn and wheat on his farm, distributing the grains to other peacocks in the village. Narayan's conscientious efforts also include keeping a register of peacocks in the Petlawad region, highlighting his dedication to their well-being.

In a world often indifferent to the needs of wildlife, Narayan Singh Anjana's story stands as a testament to the power of empathy and a strong will. His selfless acts demonstrate that anyone, regardless of profession, can make a significant impact on species conservation with genuine compassion.
