In a groundbreaking achievement, Pimpri Chinchwad, Maharashtra, led by the dynamic IAS officer Shekhar Singh, has secured its place among the top 15 cities worldwide for the prestigious Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation. The city's progressive initiatives under the Navi Disha programme, notably empowering women-led groups to manage community toilets, played a pivotal role in clinching this esteemed accolade.
Pimpri Chinchwad stood out among 193 cities spanning 54 countries, showcasing its commitment to sustainable urban development. The city's innovative measures, spearheaded by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), have transformed urban living through eco-friendly practices. Notably, the use of recycled sewage water in dust suppression vehicles has not only contributed to cleaner roads but has also improved air quality.
Residents now have the convenience of monitoring their waste from pickup to disposal through the 'Smart Sarthi' app, a technological advancement that aligns with the city's commitment to transparency and accountability. The Moshi Waste-to-Energy plant, a flagship initiative, converts waste into energy, generating a substantial 12 MW of electricity.
The PCMC's efforts extend beyond waste management, encompassing initiatives such as promoting rainwater harvesting and offering subsidies to encourage the conversion of autos to electric vehicles. These endeavors reflect the city's dedication to embracing innovative and sustainable methods for the betterment of urban life.
