Nagaland's First Medical College: A Milestone for the State and the Woman Behind It
Nagaland achieved a historic milestone in 2023 with the opening of its first medical college, the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) in Kohima. Before this, students like Zavi Paphino had to leave their home state to pursue medical education, competing for a few reserved seats across India. Now, local students have the opportunity to study in Nagaland itself, marking a turning point for the region’s healthcare education.
This breakthrough was made possible by Dr. Soumya Chakraborty, the visionary dean and director of NIMSR. With an impressive background in medical education, including establishing departments in other institutions, Dr. Soumya was entrusted with the task of setting up Nagaland's first medical college. Her decision to leave her home in Kolkata, driven by a desire to improve medical access for Naga students, reflects her deep commitment to the project.
Building the college was no easy feat. The hilly terrain, prone to landslides and difficult construction conditions, posed significant challenges. However, under Dr. Soumya's leadership, innovative solutions like retention walls were implemented, and the necessary infrastructure was completed. Today, NIMSR boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including lecture theatres, laboratories, and a hospital, offering a comprehensive education to 100 first-year students.
For Dr. Soumya, this project is more than just professional success—it's about giving back to the community. Her determination to create opportunities for young Naga doctors and improve healthcare access in the region has paved the way for a new chapter in Nagaland’s medical history.
