Nishad Kumar Secures Back-to-Back Silver Medals at 2024 Paris Paralympics, Continues Tokyo Triumph
India's Nishad Kumar delivered another stellar performance at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, securing a silver medal in the men's T47 high jump final on Sunday night, September 1. Achieving a season-best jump of 2.04 meters, the 24-year-old para-athlete cemented his status as one of the top high jumpers in his category, emulating his silver medal success from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
This latest victory makes Kumar the youngest Indian to win back-to-back Paralympic medals, adding to India's growing medal tally at the Paris Games. His leap, however, was outdone by Townsend-Roberts of the United States, who clinched gold with a 2.08-meter jump. The bronze medal went to Russia's Georgii Margiev.
India's participation in the Paris Paralympics is historically significant, with the largest-ever contingent of 84 athletes competing across 12 sports. This reflects the nation's increasing focus on para-sports and its ambitions to surpass its previous record of 19 medals, including five golds, achieved at the Tokyo Paralympics. Nishad's silver brings India's medal count in Paris to seven, comprising one gold, two silvers, and four bronzes.
Nishad's journey from overcoming the loss of his right hand in an accident to winning consecutive Paralympic medals is truly inspirational. His latest silver in Paris adds to India's growing success at the Games, following Indian parasprinter Preeti Pal's bronze in the 200m T-35 event the previous day. With more events still to come, India’s athletes continue to showcase their dedication and excellence on the global stage.
