In a remarkable display of grit and determination, Sheetal Devi, a 17-year-old para-archer from Jammu and Kashmir, has made history by becoming the world's first armless female archer. She recently received the prestigious Arjuna Award on January 9, 2024, in recognition of her outstanding achievements in para-archery.
Born with the rare medical condition phocomelia, which affected her arm development, Sheetal did not let adversity hinder her passion for archery. Inspired by paralympic swimmer Sharath Gayakwad and blind Indian cricketer Shekhar Naik, she pursued her dream of excelling in sports.
Sheetal's journey into para-archery began when scouts discovered her exceptional talent at a local event organized by the Indian Army in 2021. Under the guidance of former archer and coach Kuldeep Vedwan, she underwent training at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Complex in Katra, breaking new ground as the coaches had never trained someone without upper limbs before.
At just 16, Sheetal made headlines by participating in the Junior National Championships among abled archers in Goa in 2022. Despite not winning a medal, her unique performance, shooting the bow with her legs while sitting on a chair, captivated spectators.
The turning point came in 2023 when Sheetal became the first armless woman to secure a Para World Archery Championships medal, defeating Singapore’s Alim Nur Syahidah in a gold medal-deciding match. Her triumph continued at the Para Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, where she clinched two gold and one silver medal, making her the first Indian woman athlete to achieve such a feat in a single edition of the Asian Para Games.
Sheetal's accomplishments also extended to the inaugural Khelo India Para Games 2023, where she secured a gold medal. Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Anurag Thakur, commended her achievements, stating that Sheetal is a role model for the nation and the world.
Sheetal Devi's story is not just about breaking barriers; it is a testament to the power of passion, determination, and resilience. As she continues to inspire others, her journey stands as a shining example of triumph over adversity and the limitless possibilities of the human spirit.
