Honoring Lachit Borphukan: Unveiling a Monumental Tribute in Assam

Lachit Borphukan, renowned for his leadership in the Battle of Saraighat (1671) against the Mughal forces under Ram Singh I, stands as a symbol of Assam's historical autonomy. Born to Momai Tamuli Borbarua, he rose through the ranks of Ahom officialdom before being appointed as the Borphukan and commander of the Ahom forces by Chakradhwaj Singha. His victory in reclaiming Guwahati in 1667 marked a significant moment in Assam's history.

Despite being commemorated as a hero against Muslim invasion by some contemporary narratives, historical records indicate Lachit's inclusive leadership, with Muslim commanders like Ismail Siddique playing pivotal roles alongside him. However, with the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam, Lachit's memory has been aligned with a Hindu nationalist narrative, emphasizing his defense against supposed Muslim aggression. This appropriation of his legacy has sparked debate among historians regarding the communalization of Lachit Borphukan and the Battle of Saraighat.

In a momentous event, a colossal 125-foot statue of Bir Lachit Borphukan was unveiled in Lahdoigarh, Holongapar, Jorhat. This imposing statue not only pays homage to a historical figure but also serves as an inspiration for generations to come, symbolizing the valor and spirit of the Assamese people.
