Scientist Turns Farmer, Creates Thriving Organic Moringa Venture

Dr Kandasami Saravanan, a former soil scientist, transitioned from growing unprofitable drumsticks to cultivating moringa leaves in Tamil Nadu. Faced with declining market rates for drumsticks, he identified the growing international demand for moringa leaves. He now processes them into value-added products such as moringa powder, podi, and leaf soup, exporting them to countries like the USA, Canada, and across Europe. His switch to leaf farming has turned his four-acre farm into a highly profitable venture.

With over 20 years of expertise in soil science and agricultural chemistry, Dr Saravanan incorporated organic farming practices, such as no-till cultivation, goat manure, and drip irrigation, into his moringa leaf farm. His innovative "bundle mulching" technique, which uses crop residues to suppress weed growth and enrich the soil, has further enhanced the productivity of his land. He strategically harvests leaves six times a year, ensuring high-quality produce while conserving soil health.

Through shade drying and processing moringa leaves, Dr Saravanan now earns a net profit of Rs 40,000 per month. His venture, initially a challenge that required an investment of nearly Rs 1 crore, has blossomed into a successful business model that not only supports his family but also emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices. Today, he is at peace, grateful for following his passion and reaping the rewards of his hard work.
