The Inspiring Journey of Hetal Dave: India's First Female Sumo Wrestler
Hetal Dave, India’s first and only professional female sumo wrestler, has brought accolades and glory to the nation. However, behind her success stands her father, Sudhir Dave, who quit his job to coach his daughter, ensuring she could live her dream. Sometimes superheroes wear capes; sometimes, they wear a mawashi belt.
From an early age, Hetal was inspired by her parents' love for sports. Despite their own unfulfilled sports dreams due to lack of opportunities, Sudhir and his wife were determined not to let their children face the same fate. When Hetal expressed interest in sumo wrestling in 2008, Sudhir made a life-altering decision to become her coach, sacrificing his job to fully support her training.
Hetal’s journey from being a judo ace to making a mark in sumo wrestling is a testament to her family's unwavering support. Despite societal ridicule about her weight, Hetal found solace and strength in sports. Discovering the respect sumo wrestlers command in Japan transformed her perception of her body, turning a perceived weakness into a symbol of strength.
Her relentless research and practice, aided by her father and brother, prepared her for the 2008 World Championship in Estonia. Overcoming financial hurdles with the help of local sponsors, Hetal’s debut on the international stage was met with overwhelming support and admiration.
Though her professional career was cut short in 2012 due to lack of sponsorship, Hetal continues to inspire through her story and the documentary film ‘Sumo Didi.’ Her journey highlights the importance of belief in oneself and the extraordinary lengths a father can go to support his child’s dreams.
