"Transforming Public Spaces: Odisha’s Leprosy Colony Sets Example in Combating Stigma"

In response to the pervasive stigma faced by leprosy-affected communities, initiatives in Rourkela, Odisha, highlight the transformative power of inclusive public spaces. Led by the Rourkela Municipal Corporation and Rourkela Smart City Limited, these efforts provide valuable lessons for urban planning nationwide.

The Durgapur Leprosy Colony lacked essential amenities like a dedicated play area for young children, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents. Recognizing this, the RMC and RSCL embarked on a mission to create a welcoming environment tailored to the needs of both children and caregivers.

Key to their success was engaging directly with the community to understand their needs and preferences. By involving residents in the planning process, the project ensured buy-in and sustainability. Pilot interventions, using simple materials like tires and sand, allowed for testing and refining solutions based on community feedback.

The impact of these efforts extends beyond the immediate neighborhood. The once-isolated colony has become a vibrant hub, attracting visitors from neighboring areas and fostering a sense of dignity and inclusion among residents.

Funding for the project was secured through the convergence of various government schemes, demonstrating the potential for collaborative approaches to address social challenges.

Through proactive community participation and innovative urban planning, Rourkela’s initiatives offer a blueprint for creating inclusive public spaces that combat stigma and promote social cohesion nationwide.
