In a tale of resilience and sporting prowess, Shams Aalam Shaikh, a 37-year-old swimmer hailing from Dharavi, Mumbai, made headlines at the Reykjavik International Games 2024 by securing a total of six medals. Originally a Karateka, Shams faced a life-altering event at the age of 21 when a tumor was discovered in his backbone. Despite undergoing surgery at a prestigious private hospital in Mumbai, he found himself alive but permanently disabled.


The Reykjavik International Games, held in Laugardalslaug, Iceland, witnessed Shams' extraordinary achievements, earning him the World No.1 ranking in the men's 100m butterfly (S5) and 50m breaststroke (SB4) categories, according to the latest World Para Swimming rankings. This prestigious event, with participation from 22 countries and 400 athletes from India, took place from January 26 to 28, 2024.


Shams showcased his prowess in the fiercely contested 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke S5 categories, setting new national records. Clocking in at 2.14.25 seconds, he secured a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly, surpassing Herojit Singh's previous record. In the 100m backstroke S5, Shams clinched another bronze with a time of 2.14.42 seconds, surpassing Shreekant Desai's record.


Adding to his remarkable achievements, Shams claimed a gold medal in the 200m medley event, two silver medals in the 100m and 50m breaststroke events, and an additional bronze in the 50m backstroke event, highlighting his versatility across multiple disciplines. Impressively, his outstanding performance earned him rankings in eight events.


Shams Aalam Shaikh's journey from a Karateka to a prominent para swimmer is marked by determination and resilience. Following the life-altering event at 21, he embraced the challenge of swimming based on his doctor's advice, becoming a stalwart in the field over the last 12 years. His participation in various national and international tournaments, including the Asian Games in 2018 and 2022, as well as the World Championship in 2022, showcases his unwavering spirit and dedication to the sport. Shams' triumph at the Reykjavik International Games is not just a victory in the pool but an inspirational testament to overcoming adversity and achieving greatness.
