Zero Soil, Zero Pesticides: Tamil Nadu Farmer Revolutionizes Maize Cultivation in Cupboards

In a remarkable tale of innovation and sustainability, P. Saravanan, a seasoned farmer from Ariyagoundampatti village in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, has transformed traditional maize cultivation by embracing hydroponics. His method not only eliminates soil and pesticides but also provides a sustainable solution for growing fodder within the confines of a cupboard.

Saravanan's journey towards organic farming began in 2008 when his turmeric crop fell victim to disease, prompting him to abandon chemical-based agriculture inherited from his father. Drawing inspiration from his grandparents' organic practices, he embarked on a quest to preserve soil health and crop quality. Through training at the local Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and his own innovations, Saravanan emerged as a certified organic farmer, earning accolades including the prestigious Haldhar Organic Farmer Award from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

Transitioning from conventional methods, Saravanan adopted drip irrigation and integrated farming, managing crops alongside livestock. However, the challenge of growing adequate fodder for his cattle persisted until he discovered hydroponic maize farming in 2011. Despite initial constraints, he eventually acquired a hydroponics unit from Aavin, the local dairy cooperative, in 2018.

With this innovative system, Saravanan cultivates maize fodder without soil, utilizing a water-based solution and minimal water. Remarkably, his cupboard serves as the ideal environment for maize cultivation, shielding the trays from sunlight and facilitating rapid growth. In just eight days, he yields 4.5-5 kg of maize fodder from 500 gm of seeds, providing a sustainable solution to the fodder demand.

Saravanan's method stands as a beacon of sustainable agriculture, offering a viable alternative to conventional farming practices. His success underscores the potential of innovative approaches to address agricultural challenges while promoting environmental stewardship and food security.
